Do solar panels emit radiation?
Not the kind people worry about. Here's what panels and inverters actually give off, and how far it reaches.
Solar panels give off no material while they run. Like all wiring and appliances, the system makes weak electromagnetic fields, which are non-ionizing: not enough energy to damage DNA. Measured magnetic fields dropped to 0.5 mG or less, often to background levels, within no more than nine feet of residential inverters, an NC State review found (NC State Extension, 2017).
Panels vs inverter
- Panels make direct current, which produces a steady field like a battery, not an alternating one.
- The inverter converts it to AC and is the main source of low-frequency fields in a home system — similar to other household electrical equipment. It's usually mounted on an outside wall or in a garage.
Cancer and health
The NC State review says some have raised concerns about electromagnetic fields from electricity since the 1970s, but no studies have ever shown this EMF to cause health problems. It concluded solar PV poses no significant health danger to neighbors.
What is in the panel
Silicon panels can contain small amounts of lead in solder. Tests simulating leaching from broken panels did not find a toxicity threat from trace metals, the same review found. Old panels still belong with a recycler, not in the trash: can solar panels be recycled.
If you still want less exposure
Ask the installer to mount the inverter on an outside wall or in the garage, not on the other side of a bedroom wall.
